Final Reflection
There is a big difference..
Since I got back to school I’ve been thinking about how learning was way different in my internship compared to school. I noticed that in school I only really enjoy learning things that interest me or that at least will help me in my near future. I also realized that when I did my summer internship I loved every single thing I did so I was always engaged. Also, something that I realized was that the relationships and the independence that I was building was different than school because it was all up to me.
I'm not saying that they made me, its just that when I got there the only thing that I wanted to do was work. I wasn’t even interested on opening Facebook or my phone. The only thing I would do is open up my sketch up and start working on any of the projects assigned . Honestly, for the majority of the internship I worked on one specific project. This project involved designing the basic overview of a building so that the owners would know how the building would end up. From the start until the end I felt engaged the whole time.
I think that the reason I was more engaged in my internship than I normally am in school is because of two things. First, I was scared of the consequences of not doing the work which was not a punishment but the feeling of letting my partners and my boss down and making the people that I was working with look bad.One of the most awesome things of working in a small studio is that since its really small everyone knows what everyone is doing and everyone would know if you screwed up.It also created a cool work environment since everyone is working if one is just goofing around everyone can easly notice and the person that is goofing around would look completely bad. Also, there's something awesome about how everyone is interested in the exact same thing and even if the projects are different we are all working for the same purpose.
The second reason that I was more engaged in doing an internship than I am in school is the independence that I was given. This amazing realization came to me when I was working on a building and my mentor told me that the project I was working was going to be shown to a lady that looks at the whole project since she is the one responsible that what they build meets the specifications of the plans. It was a huge responsibility that the complete overview of the building that I made was completed in 4 days and if didn’t do it,I would look bad infront of my boss and I would be in trouble. This wouldn’t be like school when you don’t meet a deadline and the teacher sends an email home and your parents punish you. This was me and only me, so if I screwed up it would all be on me; no emails home and no problems with my parents. This independence made me feel like I was growing up.Not only I did I think that of myself, but also I noticed that my family was looking at me as if I had become more responsible.
After school started and my internship was over I could only say that working is so much cooler.I would do anything to go back to work from 9 am to 1 pm everyday. I would prefer that lifestyle because first of all I had all of my afternoon free to relax or do whatever I wanted to do and second because everyday I was able to have lunch with my family or even with friends at a restaurant close to the office.I loved how everyday I saw the same 10 people and worked on the same projects and was able to see how the projects developed. Also, one experience I really enjoyed was when my boss and I, along with 4 other architects, went to a new building that was built on the same street as our offices. When we first got there we looked around and explored different parts of the building to see how it was organized. We looked at the floors, ceilings, windows and the how light entered the building. Afterwards, we talked about the building and how we would improve it. What was the most interesting about this experience was sharing my ideas with experts and seeing how they all had different opinions. For me it was motivational to be surrounded by people with the same interest in architecture. It made me want to keep on improving my understanding of architecture. In the end, working gave me unique experiences and the feeling of growing up that school has never given to me.
